How can i make icing thinner or smoother or spreadable for cupcakes? ?

I have duncan hines whipped frosting & its too thick too spread on cupcakes. is there anyway too make this thin? or smoother? or spreadable? Please help urgent for Feb 12. Any ideas for cupcakes red and pink theme? (valentines happy birthday)
